The Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT) program responds to incidents in the city involving the discharge of hazardous substances on or near the public right-of-way or other public property. Hazardous materials include such substances as paint, plaster and building materials; motor oil and other automotive fluids; pool chemicals and diatomaceous earth. The HAZMAT team provides emergency clean-up response to keep hazardous substances out of our streets, curbs, gutters, storm drains and, ultimately, our ocean. The HAZMAT crew trains with Fire Department personnel to achieve a coordinated effort on hazardous material incident response.
The HAZMAT program is responsible for the proper disposal of all city-generated hazardous wastes. These wastes vary from illegal drugs and manufacturing chemicals seized by the Police Dept. to used motor oil generated by the city's vehicle maintenance program.
The crewmembers promote public awareness and education by distributing educational materials to the public during incident response. The crew also staff information booths and displays equipment during community events.
