Investigation Division

The Investigation Division is responsible for the investigation and follow-up of all reported crimes occurring in the city of Huntington Beach. The division is divided into two bureaus:

Detectives and Civilians in the General Investigation Bureau follow-up on reported crimes. The Bureau is divided into three units:

The Crimes Against Persons Unit investigates violent crimes including murder, robbery, rape and sexual assaults, aggravated assaults, domestic violence, assaults & batteries. A detective is assigned to follow up on all missing persons cases.

The Detectives assigned to the General Investigations Unit investigate burglaries and thefts. This includes arson, bomb threats, explosions, residential, vehicle, and commercial burglaries as well as vandalisms, thefts and grand thefts. They track stolen property and pawnshop merchandise.

The Economic Crimes Unit investigate frauds, forgeries, embezzlements, credit cards thefts, and fraudulent check cases. Many of the cases they handle are complex business related frauds requiring expert knowledge in business practices, consumer scams and frauds, and real estate law.

Detectives in the Special Investigation Bureau investigate narcotics violations, gang crimes and vice activity. They maintain intelligence files and coordinate with other police agencies to gather criminal intelligence. The Bureau investigates requests for permits and business licenses of certain specialized businesses.

Both bureaus prepare cases for court, coordinate with the District Attorney’s Office, and assist prosecutors with criminal trials.
