The mission of the Community and Library Services Commission is to make recommendations to City Council on matters relating to development, acquisition, and renovation of park, beach, libraries, and recreational facilities.
AT THE NOVEMBER 16, 2021 CITY COUNCIL MEETING, ORDINANCE NO. 4241 "AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF HUNTINGTON BEACH REPEALING THE HUNTINGTON BEACH MUNICIPAL CODE CHAPTERS 2.64 AND 2.84 AND ADDING A NEW CHAPTER 2.64 TITLED 'COMMUNITY AND LIBRARY SERVICES COMMISSION'."
The Commission is typically comprised of seven members appointed by City Council. During the transition period of combining the Community Services Commission and the Library Board of Trustees, the Commission will temporarily consist of nine members, until which time, the Library Board Members have completed their current terms.
The Commission acts in an advisory capacity to the City Council in matters pertaining to beaches facilities, park acquisition, development and maintenance, and library services. The Commission is comprised of seven Commissioners, individually appointed as a representative of each City Council Member. The commission cooperates with other governmental agencies and civic groups in the advancement of sound parks, recreational planning, and library services under the direction of the City Council. Commissioners study, report and interpret the needs of the public to the City Council, including conducting public meetings to garner community input on projects and facilities. The Commission reviews the annual Capital Improvement Projects budget as presented to the City Council and advises them on the current needs and long-range plans.
Commission Committees are vitally important to the decision making process of the Commission. They may be called upon to study various requests, problems or plans and ultimately make recommendations to Commission. Public reaction, financial impact and advantages to the community are taken into consideration.
