East Garden Grove-Wintersburg Channel Improvement Project
posted on 09/23/2020.

OC Public Works is improving the East Garden Grove-Wintersburg Channel in your area to improve flood control protection for your community.

Construction crews will begin major improvements along the section of flood control channel in Huntington Beach as shown below. The improvements will modernize the channel to current design standards, increase channel capacity for controlling stormwater during significant rain events and meet national flood insurance requirements.

The channel will be transformed from its current “trapezoid” shape with sloped sides within the channel to a rectangular channel with vertical sides. The project will include:

• Installation of long sections of vertical, interlocking steel (sheet piles) that form a continuous wall used to enhance flood protection (two rows on each side of the channel)
• Construction of a durable barrier by mixing cement into the soil between the two rows of sheet piles
• Use of large equipment, including a crane and specialized equipment to greatly reduce noise and vibration compared to standard equipment
• Construction of water quality improvements along the fence line

Anticipated Schedule: Late Sept 2020—Spring 2022 on Monday—Friday with occasional Saturday work as needed. Schedule subject to change depending on weather and other factors.

Construction activities will move along the project area in phases as various activities are completed.

Your safety is our top priority! Please stay out of the project area and observe all project safety signs, barriers and personnel.
