posted on 01/23/2018.

At 1:32 AM, an 8.2 (later downgraded to 7.8) magnitude earthquake occurred 175 miles SE of Kodiak City, Alaska. This triggered a Tsunami Warning for Alaska and British Columbia, and Tsunami Watch for the west coast. Soon after the initial notification the  Fire and Police Department began coordinating internally and with other partner agencies. At, 4:16AM  the Tsunami Warning for Alaska was downgraded to a Tsunami Advisory and the Tsunami Watch for the west coast was cancelled.  Per our county wide tsunami plan, public notifications do not take place until a Warning or Advisory is issued for Orange County coast.  This is a good opportunity to learn about the threat of tsunami and actions you should take.  For more information visit and make sure you are signed up for AlertOC at
