As residents in beautiful Southern California, we need to be aware that we live in a semi-arid region where precipitation patterns are highly unpredictable. Our local water resources are limited and we rely upon water imported, at great cost, from the Colorado River and Northern California, hundreds of miles away. It is important to use water wisely and be efficient with our precious water resources.
Using water wisely has multiple benefits including reduced energy use, which saves money on energy and water bills. More than 19% of California's total energy consumption is used for pumping, treating and transportation of water. Water efficient practices outdoors can save up to 50% of a home's total water usage with very little effort. Efficient irrigation practices also help preserve our quality of life by reducing urban runoff, which makes for a cleaner and healthier ocean environment we all can enjoy!
If we cut water waste and use water more efficiently, our existing supplies will go further. That’s why water conservation and the promotion of water use efficiency are significant components of City of Huntington Beach’s Water Supply and Management Program.
