The Volunteers In Police Services Program are made of citizens who attended and graduated from the Citizens Police Academy. The Academy is a 12 week course where citizens learn about the Police Department's many functions. After graduating, the citizen can apply to become a member in the VIPS Program (Volunteer in Police Services) to help at various special events, such as National Night Out, Curb Crime Program (a program designed to distribute information about vehicle burglary prevention), Neighborhood Watch and many others. VIPS staff the two substations located in the downtown and Oak View neighborhoods, and assist in various departments within the Police Department, such as Detective Bureau, Crime Lab, Gang Unit, Records, Crime Analyst, Administration, etc. VIPS pass out the HB Neighborhood Watch newsletters to introduce the newsletter to residence, and encourage them to get involved in the Neighborhood Watch Program. There are many other events and details they help with, as needed. Presently there are a total of 34 active VIPS members. A minimum of 60 hours is required to donate to the program annually. Unfortunately, due to budgetary constraints, we do not offer the Citizen Academy and are not recruiting for new members at this time.
