The Passage

Although this book seems daunting at 766 pages, it's a page turner that will hook you from the first page. Basically, a vampire-virus being tested by the government is accidentally released, and the end of the world seems imminent. Not only is it packed with sci-fi adventure and action, it's also the story of relationships and growing up in the midst of tragedy. This book is well written and has heart. The ending is haunting.

The Possessed - Elif Batuman

date submitted: 2010-07-12 12:47:31.0
Collection of essays about Batuman's experience as a student of Russian literature, including study- abroad & conference trips to Moscow, St. Petersburg, Samarkand, and Tolstoy's estate. She is witty and erudite - sometimes almost too much so - and sprinkles her essays equally with comedic commentary and long asides on Russian, Turkish, & Uzbek writers, culture, and history. I was charmed.

Amazing story full of love and culture. A must read for those who enjoy stories that span several generations and involve family, love, and cultural identify. So much better than the movie!!

Very strange story about circus freaks- so not for everyone. Yet, for those who love a complex and completely bizarre plot, read this! It is exciting and loaded with great lessons- a book that will stay with you after you finish.
