This year, Oak View Branch Library is celebrating its 15 anniversary! As part of the celebration, everyone is invited to help us raise funds for new children's books by contributing as low as $1.00 to "The Giving Tree / El Arbol Generoso."
You can buy a leaf to put on our tree for $1.00, an apple for $5.00, a butterfly for $10.00 or an Owl for $25.00. All items can be personalized by the donor and will be on display at this Branch.
The Oak View Branch hopes to raise at least $1,500, $100 for each year of success in the community, to purchase new books for the library. Every leaf will help get us closer to our goal!
If you wish to make a donation and/or for additional information, please call (714) 375-5068.
Children's Summer Literacy Program
Children attending 1st, 2nd & 3rd grade are eligible to participate. The class meets twice a week during the summer. The purpose is to increase math, reading, writing and expressive & receptive language development in English. Each week the class will focus on reading, writing, and talking about stories, songs, and chants centered on a specific theme.
Homework Assistance & Math/Chess Clubs
The Library provides a quiet and safe place for students to receive free assistance with homework and with special projects. The "Homework Club" is open to students from kindergarten to high school who fill out applications forms. The hours are Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm and Wednesdays from 12:30 to 4:30 pm. Tutors who are volunteers assist in the Program. Currently, we are accepting volunteers.
The Math Club is offered twice a week during the summer time. Children in 1st through 4th grade are able to participate. Games and crafts are offered to practice math skills in a fun way!
Summer Reading Program & Fall In-Out Reading Program are offered to any children between 2 and 12 years old. Readers 13 and older can participate in the Totally Teen Reading Program. Joining and completing the Reading Programs are easy and fun! You need to make weekly visits to the library and read books to earn lots of great prizes!
If you would like to learn how to play Chess, join us every Friday from 3:00 pm to 4:30 pm. Oak View Chess Club will take a summer break starting June 11th and returning on September 3rd, 2010.
If you can read this, you can help someone learn to read…Oak View is a low-income Latino community, just blocks from Central Library. Half the parents in Oak View cannot read or write in their native tongue. Fewer than 10% know how to read in English. They would like to help their children learn to read and succeed, but many of them don't know how. Here's what you can do… Become a volunteer!

Literacy Volunteers of America-Huntington Valley (LVA-HV) has been helping adults in the community develop basic literacy skills since 1984. LVA-HV is based at the Huntington Beach Central Library.
The Family Literacy Program based at Oak View Branch Library is a vital part of LVA-HV's literacy efforts in the Community. The Family Literacy Program offers tutoring for parents and special family storytimes to help young children develop a love of reading before they enter school. Trained volunteers meet with parents to help them develop English Literacy and help them learn to read with their children in English.
The Family Literacy Program offers Tutor Training Workshops three times each year to prepare volunteers to tutor adults. We invite you to help adults gain English skills. Tutors work one on one or in small groups with parents who are learning to read, write and speak English. Tutors volunteer once a week for 1-2 hours. Training will be provided.

Oak View Branch Library is the newest branch library opened in the City of Huntington Beach. It opened its door on June 3rd, 1995. The Branch Library is located in the Oak View Community, mostly a low-income Hispanic area.
At the beginning, the Branch was only open 20 hours per week. In October 1995, its hours were increased to 30 hours per week to be able to provide more services to the community. Starting October 2001, Oak View Branch Library opens 44 hours per week.
Oak View Branch started its collection with less than 5,000 books (children and adults). Most of the books and equipment we started with were donated. By the end of 1996, the collection had increased to 7,700 items. Currently our book collection has 22,000 items. Approximately 10% of the total collection is in Spanish language. The collection includes children and adult's books, magazines, newspapers and children's books on tape.
Oak View Branch Library offers a variety of services and programs. Most of them are provided free of charge.
