Easter Hunt - The annual Easter Hunt, sponsored by the Huntington Beach Kiwanis Club and the city, will take place on Saturday, April 7, at Central Park off Edwards Street. Festivities are for children up to nine years of age and begin at 10 a.m.
Afternoon Drivers Needed - Huntington Beach Senior Services needs volunteer drivers to transport seniors one afternoon per week from 12 to 4 p.m. Volunteers drive seniors in city vehicles to medical appointments, shopping, and activities. Transportation is a vital issue for seniors. Huntington Beach Senior Services partners with OCTA, the Orange County Office on Aging, the Huntington Beach Council on Aging, and Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian to provide door-to-door transportation for seniors in Huntington Beach and solve the problem that seniors have when they give up their driver's license. Volunteers are trained in safety as well as the special needs of seniors. Volunteers are requested to provide a DMV H-6 form, fingerprinting, and background check. There is no commitment required to ride along for a test drive. Please call Diane Swarts, Volunteer Coordinator, at 374-1544.
The Huntington Beach Art Center - Please join us for the Newport Repertory Theatre presentation of the comedy-drama, ER-Emergency Room, which opens Thursday, March 22, and continues through Sunday, March 25. Created by Chicago’s famed Organic Theatre Co., the play is set in a Chicago hospital where a cast of 18 characters inhabits or passes through a very realistically conceived emergency room. “A kaleidoscope of crackling comedy and drama…,” the play has been recently nominated for the Best Regional Play award of the American Theater Critics Association. For tickets and information, please call (949) 633-1580.
Firefighter Seriously Injured - On Sunday, March 11, five HBFD engines formed a strike team and were sent as part of a mutual aid agreement to the Windy Ridge fire located near the 241 toll road. The Windy Ridge fire was a disaster, with fire consuming a large number of homes and threatening many others. People in the area were being evacuated as firefighters were moving in to save their homes and property. At 2:15 p.m., while doing overhaul on a smoke charged home in Anaheim, Fire Engineer Sam Moses was accidentally struck in the face with an axe by another firefighter. He received a serious facial laceration, broken nose, and trauma to one side of his face. He underwent surgery by a team of expert physicians and is now home recuperating with his family. Sam has been with the Huntington Beach Fire Department since 1988.
Left Turn Lane Modifications on Beach Boulevard - Caltrans has begun construction on Beach Boulevard at Edinger Avenue. This is a Safety Improvement project that will increase the length of the left turn pocket on northbound Beach Boulevard to westbound Edinger. The change is intended to permit more vehicles into the left lanes. To accommodate the change, Caltrans is removing a portion of the median on Beach. The reconfiguration will include new traffic signals.
Water Consumption February 2007 - The next time you reach for a bottle of drinking water, look no further than your tap. City of Huntington Beach tap water exceeds all quality standards set for bottled water and costs less than a penny for every five gallons.
