Solar energy can also be used for making potable, brackish or saline water. Without using electricity or chemicals, waste water can be treated. Creating salt from sea water is also one of the oldest uses of solar energy.

The Street Sweeping program was established in response to Federal and State Clean Water regulations to remove debris from the streets and gutters before it can enter the storm drain system. These regulations were created to provide pollution control and to reduce the flow of urban runoff entering our waterways and ocean.
Parking control provides motivation for residents to move their vehicles, which allows for more efficient sweeping and more thorough debris removal. On a weekly basis, the city's street sweepers collect nearly 70 tons of rubbish from the streets and gutters.
