Surf City Weekly - May 3, 2024

Celebrating our Bill of Rights
For the month of May, we celebrate the formation of the Bill of Rights & how its adoption protects our fundamental freedoms. These first 10 Amendments to the United States Constitution guarantee essential rights & civil liberties, such as the right to free speech & the right to bear arms, as well as reserving rights to the people & the states.
 
Throughout the month we will be highlighting this important piece of our history & how it impacts us today.

Community Development Offers Building & Safety Events
The Community Development Department will offer a series of building & safety events to engage community members & partners. The events aim to increase awareness of using strong building materials & accessibility requirements, while taking an in-depth look at how the Department ensures building safety.

Public Works Open House - May 14
Join our Public Works Department in Downtown HB for their Annual Open House on Tuesday, May 14 from 5:00 - 8:00pm. The family-friendly event is part of Surf City Nights & will feature demonstrations, giveaways, games, exhibitions & more. Learn more about the function of Public Works and ask our highly-trained staff questions regarding the many tasks they perform around our City.
 
This event is an early celebration for National Public Works Week which takes place May 19-25, 2024. Public works professionals advance the quality of life by providing an infrastructure of services in transportation, water, wastewater, and stormwater treatment, public buildings and spaces, parks and grounds, emergency management and first response,  and right-of-way management. They are what make our communities dynamic places to live and work. Join us in celebrating the quiet work these professionals do that makes life better for all of us.

Sinkhole Repair - Bluebird Lane
The Public Works Department was notified of a potential sinkhole near Bluebird Lane. Staff from the Utilities and Street Maintenance Divisions responded to conduct an initial inspection and coordinate a repair plan. Inspection results indicated damage to an 8-inch sewer main that would require excavation and repair. Further complicating the repair, staff were faced with high groundwater and unfavorable weather conditions. City and contract staff worked cooperatively to ensure site safety measures were put in place and that the multiphase repair was completed safely and successfully. Impacted residents, as well as the Police and Fire Departments, were kept up to date throughout the multi-day process. 

Surfscape 2024
The weekend of April 27 through April 28, Huntington Beach was the host location for the 2nd annual Surfscape event in the Huntington Street beach parking lot. Building on the success of their inaugural event in 2023, the Surf Industry Members Association (SIMA) brought together a mix of over 60 surf and lifestyle vendors to showcase the current standards in the industry, including title sponsor Kona Big Wave and brands such as AVVA, AIPA, Jetty, Vissla, Sisstr, Dakine, Hobie, O’Neill, Rip Curl, Instinct, and Stewart. The event also included live talks, wetsuit and surfboard demos, along with a wetsuit recycling program, workshops, and a Saturday film screening. SIMA Executive Director Vipe Desai stated that what really stood out to him this year was the multi-generational makeup of attendees, including a “strong representation of young girls and women that were stoked to see products reflecting them.” The Surfscape team looks forward to getting together to discuss the 2024 event and to begin planning for 2025.
